Oscar faces stiffer fine for excess pounds

Manny Pacquiao will ask Oscar dela Hoya to shell out a little more than $750,000 for every pound in excess of the weight limit.

According to Pacquiao’s legal counsel, Franklin Gacal, $750,000 or a stagsgering P33 million may be too small an amount to keep Dela Hoya from weighing in heavier than the agreed limit.

The Pacquiao-Dela Hoya fight, if it happens, will be pegged at 147 lbs, and while the Golden Boy’s camp had expressed confidence that he can make the limit, the Pinoy camp will make sure he does.

“We’ve just decided that it (penalty) should be increased because $750,000 is peanuts for Oscar dela Hoya,” said Gacal during an on-line conversation with The STAR yesterday.

Gacal is in LA with Pacquiao who briefly joined the on-line chat. The web cam showed Pacquiao playing darts in the background as they spent the night inside his posh apartment unit.

“Oscar dela Hoya would be more than willing to pay $750,000 (per pound) and would come in at 150-plus during the weigh-in,” added Gacal who didn’t say how high the fine would be raised.

“The penalty will be commensurate to his (Dela Hoya) pocket,” said Gacal.

The fight, the last one for Dela Hoya, could be the biggest this year, and the Filipino superstar stands to receive no less than $10 million in guaranteed purse plus a share in pay-per-view sales.

But sources said Pacquiao wants more than that, and unconfirmed reports said Golden Boy might offer him $20 million straight up – with no more share in the pay-per-view sales.

“Negotiations are ongoing,” said Pacquiao who flies home Wednesday with his wife, Jinkee, and three kids. The day after, he leaves for the Beijing Olympics where he’ll carry the RP flag in the opening rites.

The Pacquiao camp is also asking for the weigh-in to be held on the day of the fight in a bid to deny Dela Hoya the chance to add up in weight before he climbs the ring against Pacquiao.

Dela Hoya has fought his last two fights at 150 lbs. while Pacquiao made his debut in the 135 lb division last June 28 and won the WBC crown.

When Pacquiao fought Erik Morales in January of 2006, a similar clause was stated in the contract, one that required the Mexican to shell out $250,000 for every pound in excess of the limit of 130 lbs.

In the third fight between Morales and Pacquiao, the penalty was increased to $500,000 if the Mexican weighed from 130.1 to 131 lbs, and to $1 million if he weighed more than 131 lbs.

On both occasions, Morales drained himself to make 130, and escape the penalty, but on both occasions, he lost – by knockout.
