The non-stop hype, drama, and controversy of “Pacquiao vs. Mayweather” have kept many fight fans on the edge of their seats since Pacquiao’s November 14 TKO of Miguel Cotto. It has all ended with disappointing news.
The on-again, off-again mega-bout is now officially off. Reports from camp Pacquiao and Top Rank promoter, Bob Arum strongly point to a March 13 fight with former IBF welterweight titleholder, Joshua Clottey (35-3, 20 KOs).
So why did the “Fight of the Century” fall through?
As boxing columnists have struggled to wade through the never-ending flow of multifaceted details, possibilities, and rumors – irate fans of both fighters continue their nonstop blog-fest of name calling and finger pointing. It has become difficult, if not impossible, to separate fact from fiction.
Fight negotiations that result in a lawsuit are fight negotiations that have gone horribly wrong.
But let’s cut through all the drama and look at the real facts.
It is an unequivocal fact that Manny Pacquiao is innocent. How can anyone possibly know that? It’s simple.
The judicial system of the United States operates on the presumption of innocence. This is the simple “innocent until proven guilty” rule.
When a person is accused of a crime, he or she has no burden to prove his or her innocence. The burden of proof falls squarely upon the person who makes the allegations. This means that Pacquiao is under no obligation to jump through all of Mayweather’s carefully placed hoops.
Where did the accusations of Manny Pacquiao’s alleged PED use come from?
Did someone see him being injected with some illegal substance? Not that we know of.
Did a disgruntled member of his camp squeal to the press? No.
Did he ever test positive for any form of performance enhancing drugs? No.
Let’s all be sensible about this. The original accusations came from Floyd Mayweather Sr.
What are the accusations founded upon? Manny Pacquiao has been accused of taking “some type of supplements” because he’s an excellent fighter who has brought his power with him as he’s moved up in weight. That’s it. There are no smoking guns or dripping syringes to be found.
Yet the Mayweather camp has managed to tarnish Pacquiao’s respected reputation as a boxer and discredit everything he’s accomplished in the sport. Does this really make sense?
All of these accusations seem to be based on the simple fact that he started as a kid at 106 pounds and now he fights at 147 at the age of 31.
While Manny Pacquiao is innocent of using performance enhancing drugs, he is guilty of securing a legacy among the greatest boxers the sport has ever seen. His fallen opponents are the evidence. The proof lies in his record. He’s a multiple offender. 50 times he’s been caught red-handed. [via]
