Will Air21 deliver today Sunday?
Air21 goes for the first of its two chances for a first-ever PBA crown as the fired-up Express battle the Barangay Ginebra Kings in Game Six of the PBA Fiesta Cup finals at the Araneta Coliseum.
But the Express are expected to pour it all tonight as they hope to savor the sweet taste of a first championship in six years of participation in the country’s premier cage league.
“It could be a little distraction but it should be there. Nonetheless, we’ll do our best to get it in Game Six,” said Air21 coach Bo Perasol, referring to the purple balloons and confetti hanging at the Big Dome rafters.
Game time is at 6:30 p.m.
The Express showed endgame spunk to pull off a thrilling 76-73 decision in Game Five Friday at the Astrodome to shatter the series’ 2-2 count.
The Express try to sustain their momentum from that hard-earned win as they go for the clincher against a team reeling from a spate of injuries.
Already without Jayjay Helterbrand, the Kings will have Mark Caguioa nursing a bad back in tonight’s all-important game. His injury and Arwind Santos’ pesky defense had Caguioa struggling to only seven points Friday.
With other key players playing hurt, the Kings slowed down the pace of the game only to be beaten at endgame.
“We did everything we wanted to accomplish except win the game,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico after the contest.
With the same game plan, Uichico hopes to derail the Express to force a deciding Game Seven.
“Our options are limited because of injuries. We can no longer make major adjustments,” said Uichico.
Should Air21 get the championship, Welcoat will be left as the only existing PBA ball club without a title.
The Express have been waiting for this moment since taking over the Tanduay franchise in 2002. The team’s previous best finish was third in the 2006 Fiesta Conference.
