Reports from the US reveal that while the proposed Dec. 6 showdown between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao is not a heartbeat away from being signed, indications point towards a possible compromise agreement.

Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer told the Los Angeles Times in a story that came out Tuesday that “he (Pacquiao) sort of realized that 30% of the big pie is better than 100% percent of the small pie.”

But Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, who promotes the Filipino pound-for-pound champion also told the Times that Pacquiao remains steadfast about getting not less than 40% share of the revenue.

Still, Arum said “there’s still the possibility of meeting somewhere in the middle.”

Even Franklin Gacal, Pacquiao’s lawyer, told the Bulletin that the 29-year-old southpaw doesn’t really care about “percentages but is after what is fair and equitable.”

“The 60% profit is far bigger than the 99% De La Hoya will get by fighting other boxers,” said Gacal. “If Oscar fights somebody other than Pacquiao, he won’t get a large pay-per-view buy because he’ll miss the Filipino audience.”

“Most of these boxing fans will just wait for the outcome of the fight in the news,” added Gacal.

Still the Golden Boy sounded upbeat about the prospects of making his last fight truly unforgettable.

During his annual celebrity golf tournament in Burbank, California, on Monday, De La Hoya told Sports Illustrated that he intends to make his last fight a “worldwide event” where people would talk about it as though it was the closest thing to an Olympic Games.

“I want a big fight,” said De La Hoya. “I want to go out with a big bang. I want to make it an event. I want to make it a worldwide event because I want to show the boxing world and I want to show everybody around the world that boxing is alive and well. I want them to say, ‘Look at this big event December 6.’”

After Top Rank and GBP’s negotiations broke down last week, Schaefer began discussing a probable matchup with Sergio Mora but the fact that Mora has a scheduled Sept. 13 bout makes it unrealistic since De La Hoya wants to finalize everything concerning his last fight finished by the end of next week or early next week at the latest.

Apart from the revenue split, nearly all the major terms have been agreed upon by both parties, including the weight of the gloves (8 oz) and weight limit (147 lbs) although which among ABS-CBN (channel 2) and GMA (channel 7) will show it on local TV from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas remains a big question mark.
