THE seventh Shakey’s V-League women’s volleyball tournament opens on April 11 at the Arena in San Juan City with a 10-team cast including three provincial schools from the Visayan region. Moying Martelino, Chairman of the organizing committee of Sports Vision Management Group Inc., said it will not only be a clash of the finest and brightest teams from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) but also from best teams in Visayas.
UST drew first blood in the finals of 72nd UAAP men’s and women’s volleyball tournament Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan.
The reigning Tigers leaned on prized spiker John Paul Torres who sizzled with 19 points and four ace services while Hendry Pecaña contributed 15 hits to sweep the Tamaraws in three sets.
The men’s volleyball finals in the 72nd UAAP season will be a repeat of the 2007 edition after top seed University of Santo Tomas and season host Far Eastern U dispatched separate rivals in the Final Four round Saturday at The Arena in San Juan City.
UST, aiming to win its third straight title, made quick work of fourth ranked University of the Philippines, 25-, 25-19, 25-21 while second seed FEU recovered from an opening set loss to escape with an 18-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 triumph over No. 3 Ateneo.
Reigning titlist De La Salle continued its unbeaten rampage in the 72nd UAAP women’s volleyball tournament, notching its 10 straight win at the expense of Far Eastern U, 25-16, 25-23, 25-14 Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
