MANILA, Philippines – The country’s brightest medal hope in the cycling competitions of the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou in November yesterday called for unity within the local cycling association.

Le Tour Filipinas champion David McCann of Ireland agreed to come back and help train local cyclists, a move that could introduce Filipino riders to the international level of competition.

South African, a Japanese and the country’s very own Arnel Quirimit finished 1-2-3 in Stage 3 of the 2010 Le Tour de Filipinas, a leg that did not create a dent in the overall standings, but one which highlighted Manila and Pasay City as one of the stops of the country’s first international multi-stage road cycling race in 12 years. TAGAYTAY CITY – Age doesn’t matter, and so does size for a giant of a rider by Philippine standards in Irishman David McCann of Team Giant Asia Riding Team.

MANILA, Philippines – Two-time Tour champion Warren Davadilla bucked father time, upstaging younger rivals to rule the two-stage Koten Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) Summer Cycling Classic that ended in Cabanatuan City yesterday.

Veterans Loyd Lucien Reynante and Merculio Ramos, and Under-23 rider Mark Rome Antonio were the only Filipino riders that finished the nine-stage 6th Binh Duong Television International Cycling Tour in Vietnam.

Irish Valenzuela outsprinted five other veteran riders, including defending champion Baler Ravina, in the last 300 meters to crown himself as the champion of the 2010 National Open Monday in Tagaytay City.
The 23-year old native of Tabaco, Albay finished the grueling massed start race in four hours and 45.93 seconds, the same time given to the other five riders in the lead group. Read the rest of this entry »
VIENTIANE – The international cycling federation yesterday rejected with finality an appeal by the Southeast Asian Games Federation Council to allow the Filipinos to compete in the cycling competitions – a move expected to reverberate beyond the 25th Southeast Asian Games here.
In a letter to Lao Olympic Committee vice-president Kasem Inthara, UCI president Pat McQuaid reiterated the UCI stand recognizing the Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines (PhilCycling) and its president, Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino.
The letter effectively ruled out the participation of the 13 Filipino cyclists who were not granted valid licenses to compete in the SEA Games. The cycling competitions start today with the men’s downhill event outside the city limits.
Only Maritess Bitbit, the 2007 SEAG gold medalist, will be allowed to participate since she carries a license issued by the Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines (PhilCycling). Read the rest of this entry »
