MANILA, Philippines — Grandmasters (GMs) Wesley So, Rogelio “Joey”Antonio Jr. and Darwin Laylo will spearhead the Philippines’ participation in the upcoming 2010 Asian Continental Chess Championship in April at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center in Zambales.

MANILA, Philippines — Grandmaster Wesley So gained 9.3 points according to the March 2010 RP-FIDE rating list to post the highest ranking ever in the International Chess Federation (FIDE) list by a Filipino.
The 16-year-old Bacoor, Cavite based chess player is now ranked No. 64 in the world with a total of 2665 ELO rating points after gaining 9.3 points in Corus B and Aeroflot Chess.

Filipino GM Wesley So (2656) played white and drew his game against GM Arman Pashikian (ELO 2642) of Armenia in round six of the Aeroflot Open 2010 Tournament in Moscow, Russia.
The players castled on opposite sides of a Queen’s gambit and the game ended in a bishop and pawn endgame.
GM Wesley So lost playing with the black pieces against Vietnamese GM Ngoc Truongson Nguyen in his third round game Thursday night (Manila Time) in the ongoing Aeroflot Open 2010 Tournament in Moscow, Russia.
Nguyen opened with 1.Nf3 and used a King’s Indian attack setup. They both castled kingside and Nguyen launched his king side pawns to storm Wesley’s king. So defended well and managed to exchange queens and enter the endgame. Filipino GM Wesley So scored a crucial win with the black pieces against GM Tomi Nybäck of Finland in the tenth round of the Corus B tournament in Holland last Wednesday. Nyback opened with d4 and So responded with his favorite Slav defense.
Nybäck went all out in his attack as he sacrificed a piece in his 33rd move. But So coolly defended and the Finnish grandmaster capitulated after 46 moves. WIJK AAN ZEE, Netherlands – Grandmaster Wesley So played his best game yet and ended a string of five draws with an ego-boosting win over 2005 European champion GM Liviu-Dieter Nisepeanu of Romania in the sixth round of the 72nd Corus chess tournament at the De Moriaan Community Centre here Friday.
So dusted off an old idea against Nisipeanu’s hyper-modern Reti opening, countering with a solid Slav formation with the disadvantageous black pieces and getting rid of an impending draw with precise continuation for his first win in the tough, 13-round, category-16 tournament. GM Wesley So played the white pieces for the first time in the Corus B tournament in Holland against GM Varuzhan Akobian of the U.S.
So (ELO 2656) has been expanding his opening repertoire and utilized the Queen’s Gambit. Akobian entered the endgame with a disadvantageous fractured pawn structure. MANILA, Philippines – Sixteen-year-old Grandmaster Wesley So continued to raise the level of excellence when he reached ELO 2656 based on the Jan. 1 ratings released by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
With his strong showing in the recent World Chess Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia where he eliminated former world championship finalists Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine and Gata Kamsky of the United States, So earned 16 points to increase his ELO 2640 from the November list to ELO 2656.
