Efren “Bata” Reyes finish his final match against hometown bet Brandon Shuff into a virtual workout as he sped away, 15-8, late Friday to snare the Fat Boy 10-Ball Challenge at the Horseshoe Casino and Hotel in Indiana, USA.
Save for some anxious moments in the homestretch, the 55-year-old Hall of Famer was in full control of the duel, taking a commanding 6-0 lead on the way to ruling the event that made him $6,500 (roughly P310,000) richer.
Living up to his tag as “The Magician,” Reyes displayed one spectacular shot after another as he finished the 16-player, single elimination round event, undefeated.
The former Virgina state champion Shuff actually launched a small comeback and made it 5-13, but that was the best he could do as Reyes got into the hill in the next rack before sealing the win.
On the way to the final, Reyes has beaten a lot of marquee names, including his fellow world champion and billiards great from the United States Johnny Archer, 15-9. Shuff settled for $3,250 (P156,000) runner up purse.
The win was a great follow up to Reyes’ bridesmaid finish in the 9-ball banks event three days ago in the ongoing 12th Derby City Classic held in the same venue.
A native of Angeles City, Reyes is also competing in the 9-ball division of the Derby City Classic.
Reyes will go up against Bernie Collins of the USA while stablemate and former World No.1 Francisco “Django” Bustamante will meet Sylver Ochoa of Mexico.
Also competing in the 9-ball competition is veteran pool player Rodolfo “Boy Samson” Luat.
