Adamson University quenched its thirst for a major title yesterday as the Lady Falcons downed the Ateneo Lady Eagles, 25-17, 25-13, 25-17, to win the 2008 Shakey’s V-League crown at the jampacked crowd The Arena in San Juan City.

Banking on an explosive showing from conference MVP Neriza Bautista and Finals MVP Rissa Laguilles, the Lady Falcons reasserted their mastery over the Loyola-based tossers to sweep their best-of-three title showdown.

Adamson, which seemed to have everything going on both ends of the floor, needed only 65 minutes to finish off the Lady Eagles.

Adamson took Game 1, 25-7, 25-14, 23-25, 25-22.

The 5-foot-10 Bautista, earlier named MVP of the conference, sizzled with 17 points while Laguilles added 12 kills and Angela Benting, the best server, had eight for Adamson, which became the third squad to win the championship in the five-year history of the league.

University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University, which both begged off from competing this conference, have three each.

“Very proud ako sa mga anak ko (players) kasi they really matured sa games nila. Tinatak nila lahat ng itinuro ko,” said Adamson mentor Dulce Pante. “I already expected this win because confident ako na kaya nila manalo dahil mas lamang sila sa skills.”

Learning valuable lessons from their heartbreaking meltdowns in two other major tournaments early this year, the Lady Falcons were not only sharp but also entertaining.

The Lady Falcons made it into the finals of the UAAP and the Inter-Collegiate volleyball championships but were denied on both occasions.

Yesterday, they were all business from start to finish.

“Hindi talaga para sa amin ‘yun (UAAP and Inter-Collegiate). Thankful lang talaga ako for those instances kasi we’ve learned from that,” Pante added.

The Lady Falcons sized up the Lady Eagles in each set before pouring on the heat with their big plays. The only time Ateneo threatened was in the third set when it fought back from a seven-point deficit to move to within 11-13 that forced Adamson to call its first time out of the game.

Adamson found its second wind to complete its domination of Ateneo in this tournament backed by Shakey’s Pizza Active White skin whitening products, Mail and More, ICT Call Center, 100Plus Energy, Mikasa, Accel and presented by Sports Vision.

Michelle Segodine also had some fine moments on the court with 13 points.

Only Thai import Emorn Phanusit scored in double digits with 11 for Ateneo.

“It was really difficult for us. But we’ve learned a lot from this experience. Sa tingin ko kulang pa sa skills ang mga bata,” said Ateneo coach Michelle Laborte, who steered her team this year to its best ever finish since joining the league in 2005.
