MANILA, Philippines – The long wait is over for arnis, the traditional Filipino martial art, to become the national sport.

And it took a senator and an arnis expert as well, to give the sport, being practiced around the world the recognition it deserves.

“We’ve done it. Now we have the law,” said Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri who, along with Representatives Henry Teves and George Arnaiz, authored the law making arnis the country’s national martial art and sport.

Republic Act 9850 was signed by President Arroyo on Dec. 11, a move that was welcomed by Zubiri and the countless arnis practitioners in the country, from the grandmasters to those who’ve just taken up the sport. Read the rest of this entry »

MANILA, Philippines – Four Filipino chess players based in the United States made respectable finishes in a series of chess tournaments held in the US.

The Virginia-based FIDE Master (FM) Anton Paolo del Mundo, a former Ateneo de Manila University stalwart, won the 14th annual Northern Virginia Chess Championships in Arlington.

Del Mundo finished in a tie for 1st place with FM Tegshsuren Enkhbat of Mongolia and International Master (IM) Adu Oladapo of Nigeria after tallying 4.5 points each in five outings. Read the rest of this entry »

Las Vegas has finally crossed the finish line to land the March 13 mega fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, sources close to both fighters said Saturday.

Boxing Monthy, the British-based magazine, has named Manny Pacquiao as its choice for Fighter of the Year for 2009.

In a decision that did not come as a surprise to everyone in the know, Pacquiao’s selection stemmed from his two victories against topnotch opposition, the second-round demolition of Englishman Ricky Hatton in May and the Filipino’s brutal stoppage win over Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto in November. Legendary Filipino bowler Rafael “Paeng” Nepomuceno proved to be a big hit at a diplomats’ bowling tournament in Turkey last weekend, helping raise a “modest sum” for victims of recent typhoons back home.

Two-time Olympian Harry Tañamor breezed his way to the gold medal round of the 25th Southeast Asian Games following a clinical 12-4 win over Htet Aung of Myanmar in the semifinals of the light-flyweight class Sunday in Vientiane.
