Z GorresZ Gorres is slowly but surely recovering eleven days after undergoing emergency neurosurgery in Las Vegas. Michael Aldeguer, President of ALA Promotions, has updated via e-mail that Gorres can now be placed in a sitting position. He can give you numbers one to four if instructed to. These are all good signs from a neurological standpoint.

He does have mild pneumonia and one of the reasons why they could not wean him off the ventilator. Aldeguer also said that Gorres opened his eyes but still looks blank and is not aware of things. Hopefully, in the next few days he may gradually improve and be more aware of external stimuli. Read the rest of this entry »

If the fight to stage Mayweather-Pacquiao is anything to go by, then it is going to be one hell of a clash.

Negotiations between the two camps began on Monday and Manny Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum, has revealed that Texas and New Orleans are battling it out with Las Vegas to put on the superfight.

As boxing promoters Bob Arum and Richard Schaefer have begun the process of hammering out a deal for a 2010 showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, officials in Las Vegas are scrambling to keep the fight on the Strip.

Las Vegas has been hit harder than most cities by the recession and, with 13 percent unemployment, is in need of major events to bolster tourism and invigorate its economy. A potential Pacquiao-Mayweather bout would likely be the largest-grossing boxing match in history. Predictions for the pay-per-view sales alone have reached as high as 5 million.

Pacquiao is the top-ranked fighter in Yahoo! Sports’ ratings of the world’s best boxers with Mayweather sitting at No. 2. They’re each in their prime – Pacquiao is 30 and Mayweather is 31 – and each fights at welterweight. Read the rest of this entry »

shane mosley“Pacquiao made a believer out of me with Cotto, so I wouldn’t count Pacquiao out. I think Pacquiao could do a number on Mayweather because Mayweather’s chin is not that good.

I think that Pacquiao could very well knock out Mayweather too,” stated welterweight champion Shane Mosley as shared his thoughts on Manny Pacquiao’s dominant win over Miguel Cotto. Mosley, who was in attendance and sitting ringside, admits that he was surprised to see how strong Pacquiao looked at the bigger weight and is now convinced that the Filipino superstar is a full-fledged welterweight. HOLLYWOOD – Manny Pacquiao was vocal enough to say he no longer wants to have anything to do with former champion Juan Manuel Marquez finally closing the possibility of a third fight between him and his long-time Mexican nemesis.

Walang manood diyan kapag si Marquez ang kalaban. Sinong manood pa diyan?” Pacquiao said emphatically turning down a fight against the same man who forced him to a controversial draw, which he later defeated by split decision in a big-time rematch.

Manny Pacquiao enjoys a light moment with trainer Freddie Roach at the latter’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood.

With Marquez literally out of Pacquiao’s picture, the newly-crowned seven-division champion is left with no choice but to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in what many perceive as one of the biggest matches ever in boxing history.

Pacquiao said he wants to relax first and enjoy some time with his family after winning a 12-round battle against Miguel Cotto in their welterweight title bout Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Read the rest of this entry »

pacquiao_cottoHeading into 2009 the debate as to who was the “Fighter Of The Decade” was still up for grabs between Manny Pacquiao 50-3-2 (38) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. 40-0 (25) as both had a legitimate claim to the honor. Both Pacquiao and Mayweather captured multiple division titles over the last ten years and were considered the best pound for pound fighter in boxing circa 2000-2009.

Mayweather has remained undefeated since making his pro-debut in 1996 and Pacquiao’s only defeat in the last 10 years came in 2005 against Erik Morales who he later defeated in two subsequent rematches. Another commonality that Pacquiao and Mayweather shared during the decade is they both defeated Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton in three of their biggest and most high profile bouts fought between featherweight and junior middleweight.

This past weekend Pacquiao took apart Miguel Cotto, a fighter many boxing aficionados believe Floyd Mayweather had no intention of fighting since Cotto moved up to welterweight. And it’s Pacquiao’s victory over Cotto to capture the WBO welterweight title that erases any doubt whatsoever as to who has earned the distinction as the fighter of the 2000′s.
