MVP runner-up Arwind Santos of Air21 played outstanding defense all throughout the game, capping it with a big steal and converting the fastbreak layup with 43 seconds left, giving the Express enough cushion to record a nerve-wracking 76-73 Game 5 win over the Brgy. Ginebra Kings, moving a win shy of bagging the 2007-2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Santos finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals, import Steven Thomas had 15 and 19 while the teams’ leading scorer, Gary David also had 15.

Manny Pacquiao yesterday described Oscar dela Hoya’s offer as “unconscionable” and “unacceptable” as negotiations for a dream showdown between the two superstars came to a screeching halt.
Pacquiao, the pound-for-pound king, and Dela Hoya, the pay-per-view king, have been working out a deal the last two weeks, but just couldn’t find one that would be acceptable for both.
However, experts believe that all’s not lost on the deal yet, and that both camps may soon resume talks – as quietly as possible. In boxing, as the old saying goes, “money talks.” Read the rest of this entry »
Barangay Ginebra coach Joseph Uichico found a way to derail the Air21 Express in Game 4 of their best-of-7 duel for the PBA Fiesta Conference title at the Araneta Coliseum last Wednesday.
Uichico challenged the Kings to step up defensively and get in the face of every Air21 player who dared to take a shot. Realizing Ginebra will never win in a shootout against the Express, he turned to defense as the weapon to avoid falling into a 1-3 hole and square the series at two wins apiece. For someone who is not new to the pressure of a title series, Ginebra coach Jong Uichico remains upbeat despite losing two in a row to Air21 in their Smart PBA Fiesta Cup finals.
Well, it might be because of his character or his experience.
Hardened by his six championships with San Miguel Beer and another one with Ginebra last year, Uichico knows their situation – down 2-1 in the series – remains reversible.
“We’re not panicking, there’s actually no need,” said Uichico. Read the rest of this entry »

Even the weight of the gloves will now have a weight in the proposed megafight between superstars Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Paccuiao.
“If Oscar insists that Manny should use 10oz gloves, then, I don’t think the fight will materialize,” said Pacquiao lawyer Franklin Gacal said yesterday from General Santos City.
Gacal said one of Pacquiao’s conditions is for him to be allowed to wear 8oz gloves and for De La Hoya to use 10oz gloves since he is the naturally bigger boxer. Read the rest of this entry »
