In 1975, Adornado began his PBA career with the Crispa Redmanizers and earned the distinction of being the very first PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) and also the first PBA player to win the said award in back-to-back seasons in 1975 and 1976, leading Crispa to four PBA titles during that time including the very first recorded Grand Slam in 1976. He was a prolific scorer with a deadly outside shot. In an era where shooting coaches were unheard of, Adornado had a picture-perfect textbook jump-shot that was unstoppable especially in clutch situations. He is a three-time PBA Most Valuable Player in 1975, 1976 and 1981.
Believe it or not, Red Bull is negotiating to hire NBA great and former Utah Jazz star as one of its imports in the PBA Fiesta Cup next month.
Known as “The Mailman” for his ability to deliver for his team, Malone has been retired for several years and is turning 45 on July 27.
This move is apparently not a publicity stunt because Tony Chua, Red Bull’s representative said yesterday that negotiations are currently underway to lure Malone who retired as one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players.
Malone, whose teamup with guard John Stockton is one of the most enduring two-man partnership in NBA history, helped the Jazz to reach the NBA Finals twice and losing on both occasions to the Chicago Bulls led by Michael Jordan.
“We actually have three options but Karl Malone is our priority,” Chua told the Bulletin. “We’re still awaiting his decision. I think it will be good not only for our team but also for the league.”

Juan Manuel Marquez doesn’t mind, at all, being the underdog in his March 15 battle with Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.
He said the fight odds mean nothing to him.
“It is the opinion of the people. But that motivates me more to win,” the reigning WBC super-featherweight said barely three weeks before his rematch with Pacquiao.
As of Monday, online bookmakers in the United States have placed the 34-year-old Mexican as a +145 underdog, meaning a $100 bet placed on him wins $145.
Pacquiao, at 29, younger and faster, has maintained his status as the favorite and is even tipped to win by knockout. At –185, you need $185 to win just a hundred bucks.
The Filipino superstar said he doesn’t care about the odds, too, but that’s easier to say if you are the favorite. Read the rest of this entry »
Undefeated Filipino boxer Eric Canoy nabbed the WBO Oriental featherweight crown by knocking out Tanzanian Rajabu Maoja in Zamboanga over the weekend, ABS-CBN News learned Monday.
According to a report posted on www.philboxing.com, Canoy sent Maoja to the canvass with 1:17 minutes remaining in the ninth round, effectively ending the bout Saturday.
The win improved Canoy’s record to 7 wins with 5 KOs.
Canoy dropped Maoja in the opening round with a shot to the body. He also hit his opponent straight to the jaw near the end of the fourth, sending the Tanzanian starry-eyed on the way to his corner.
Referee Bruce McTavish deducted a point from Canoy after throwing rabbit punches at the back of Maoja’s head in the fifth round.

Purefoods governor Rene Pardo resigned Sunday as chairman of the PBA ethics committee as he still intends to take the “James Yap case” to the league board although it had already decided on the ball club’s earlier appeal.
“It should not end here. I’ll take to the board the procedure done by commissioner Sonny Barrios in handling this controversy,” said Pardo. “This is beyond the series. No matter what the outcome of the series, we want to rectify this problem not only for present application but for the future.”
Pardo called up board chairman Tony Chua to inform him of his resignation Sunday morning.
On Saturday, Chua announced that the board affirmed the commissioner’s decision to suspend Yap in Game Five of the Purefoods-Sta. Lucia title series for his flagrant foul on Joseph Yeo in Game Three. Read the rest of this entry »

People were still amazed by the sight of Superman.
Dwight Howard’s sensational display of athleticism and imagination in the slam dunk contest, highlighted by a dunk while donning the Man of Steel’s cape, was still being talked about yesterday.
It was the first time a high-tech vote system had been used to crown an NBA slam dunk king, although five former NBA greats such as Julius Erving and Magic Johnson who had judged the first round unanimously saw Howard as the winner.
Howard wore a blue Superman tunic and red cape on a first-round alley-oop dunk after having electrified the crowd by slamming in a left-handed dunk after first bouncing the ball off the rear side of the backboard.
“People like to see that. They don’t want to see the same old dunk. People want something with some spice,” Howard said. “This year all the guys tried to bring some spice to the dunk contest.”
Howard, who will start for the Eastern Conference in Sunday’s 57th NBA All-Star Game, received perfect scores of 50 for both first-round dunks to advance while Memphis’ Rudy Gay and Toronto’s Jamario Moon were eliminated.
“The first one I’ve been working on it for about two years but I could never really get it down. I had my legs under me and got it down,” Howard said.
“The Superman dunk, I wanted to get the crowd into it, put some of my personality in it with the Superman cape. To make the dunk after that was unbelievable. The cape and the Superman outfit, I think it really worked.”

MANILA, Philippines — The proposed UAAP and NCAA merger is part of a “national objective” that aims to streamline the basketball program of collegiate leagues nationwide.
